How To Reset Your Linode Servers Root Password

In this video, I will show you how to reset the root password for your Linode server. If you have forgotten your root password to one of your Linode servers, you can reset the root password through your Linode servers settings. Resetting the root password for a specific Linode server will first require you to Power Off your Linode and choose a new root password to reset it. Once your Linode servers root password has been reset, login to your Linode server via the SSH protocol using an SSH client.

Steps To Reset Your Linode Servers Root Password:

1. Open up your browser and navigate to Linode's homepage. If you haven't already created a Linode account, you can sign up using the following referral link: https://www.linode.com/lp/refer/?r=e79e5bc41705426b5ccfc5d94059e6569b660f73 My referral link will give you $100 in cloud credits for free to test out Linodes servers free for 60 days.
2. Click "Log In" at the top right hand corner of the page to sign in to your Linode account
3. Once you have signed in to your Linode account, click on "Linodes" at the top left hand side
4. You will now see a list of all your Linode servers. Hover over the Linode server which you want to reset the root password for, and click on "Power Off" to shutdown your Linode server.
5. Click "Power Off Linode"
6. Your Linode server will now begin shutting down, once the status has changed to "Offline", navigate to your Linode servers label and click on its hyperlinked blue text
7. Click on the "Settings" tab
8. Scroll down until you see "Reset Root Password", select your Disk and enter your new desired root password
9. Click "Save" to successfully change your Linode servers root password
10. Navigate to the top left hand corner and click on "Linodes" to be taken back to your Linode server list
11. Hover over your Linode server once again and click "Power On" to start back up your Linode server
12. Click "Power On Linode"
13. Your Linode server will now begin booting up, once the status has changed to "Running" you will now be ready to test out your newly resetted Linode server root password. Open your desired SSH client by double clicking on the shortcut on your desktop. If you're on Windows as demonstrated in this video, open the SSH client called PuTTY.
