Tape Loops are one of my favourite ways to capture a unique sonic aesthetic and mood. These second-long snippets are also surprisingly versatile, allowing you to manipulate them in fun ways.
I love the simplicity and speed with which you can record a few seconds of audio, which can then be augmented using different speed settings (if you have a player that allows this) and other techniques. Often, the shoddiness of the recording doesn't even matter and, in fact, can sometimes prove beneficial. Lo-Fi is definitely the name of the game here! Like the crackle of dust on vinyl, there is something strangely powerful and nostalgic about the warble and hiss of tape.
In other words, tape loops are great.
Making a tape loop, however, is something else entirely! A true test of patience and perseverance. In this video you will see the struggle as I repeatedly fail and fumble my way to success.
Definitely not a 'how to' video, but it may just give you a genuine insight into the fiddly world of tape loop crafting.
If you want to get your hands on some tape loops without the fuss and fight, why not check out my sample pack linked above. I've included the loops featured in this video (made using the loop tape you see being constructed here), available for free download at bandcamp. Or, you can download the whole sample pack for the price of coffee shop panini!
Hope you enjoy!
