For those of you who, like me, are not blessed with a great singing voice, it can be daunting to use our own voice in a production. However, we all have this versatile instrument at our fingertips; so, why shouldn’t we use it?
With the myriad of powerful tools we have available to us today, I believe we can all use our voices to experiment with, at the very least. Flex pitch is a great addition to Logic Pro. Although not perfect, it does give us the ability to pitch and time correct vocals, right inside the DAW, with no need for third party software. But, have you ever considered, or tried using it for creative applications?
That will be the focus of today’s video. I will be recording some VERY scratch vocals (you might want to mute that part!!!) and then I will use Flex Pitch to re-pitch the recorded notes. This will allow us to experiment with and sketch different melodic ideas, until we find something inspiring. This method does not require us to have lyrics, as any gibberish will work for the purposes of sketching-out ideas.
Once we have something we like, we can then re-record the vocals, singing the new melody. Alternatively, we can hand it over to someone more qualified, if that is preferable. Even then, we can still make use of flex pitch, to further tweak the melody, create artificial phrases that would be impossible to sing, pitch the entire vocal up or down an octave and even adjust the formants for extra interest.
Hope you find some useful applications for these techniques in your own productions. Even those of us, not blessed or practiced enough to have a good singing voice, can still make use of this very versatile instrument, that we sometimes overlook.
Thanks, as always, for watching.
