On March 3, 2022, Markeith Loyd was officially sentenced to death for the murder of Orlando police officer Lt. Debra Clayton in 2017. This sentence comes after Loyd was convicted by a unanimous jury on December 8, 2021 for the fatal shooting of Lt. Clayton.
The sentencing hearing took place at the Orange County Courthouse in Orlando, Florida. Loyd, now 45 years old, showed no emotion and simply stated "I waive my Spencer hearing. I want to be sentenced today. Y'all been doing all kinds of stuff all along." He then told his family he loved them before being formally sentenced by Judge Leticia Marques.
Lt. Clayton was murdered on January 9, 2017 in the parking lot of a Walmart in Orlando. She had approached Loyd to arrest him for the earlier murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon. Loyd fatally shot Lt. Clayton as she attempted to apprehend him. This sparked a massive week-long manhunt for Loyd, who was eventually located and arrested after a violent altercation with police that left him losing an eye.
Throughout his trial, Loyd claimed he acted in self-defense against Lt. Clayton and that police had tried to "kill" him. However, prosecutors presented evidence that Loyd had shot Lt. Clayton multiple times while she was on the ground. The jury ultimately rejected Loyd's self-defense claim and unanimously recommended the death penalty after two hours of deliberation.
In addition to the death of Lt. Clayton, Loyd had previously been sentenced to five consecutive life sentences in 2019 for the first degree murders of Sade Dixon and her unborn child. Loyd had fatally shot his pregnant ex-girlfriend Dixon after an argument in December 2016.
The sentencing marks the end of a lengthy court process for Loyd's horrific crimes. Lt. Clayton's loved ones expressed some relief that justice had finally been served, with Orlando Police Chief Rolón stating "Although nothing can undo the heartache created by the defendant's heinous actions, we hope that this brings solace to our community, knowing a dangerous murderer will face the highest penalty provided by the law."
