The Failures of Affirmative Care: Detransitioner Chloe Cole's Testimony
Thinker Of Thoughts
On Feb 21, 2023 the Florida House Health & Human Services Committee heard testimony from Chloe Cole, a young woman who experienced gender dysphoria as a child and was put through the Affirmative Care treatment pathway - undergoing puberty blockade, cross-sex hormones and bilateral mastectomy.
She has since realized that these therapies were not right for her and that the health care providers who applied the affirmative care model failed in their ethical duties towards her and her family. Their lapses include not exploring underlying comorbidities, using false and coercive statements about the risk of suicide, discounting the concerns of her parents, not adequately assessing her competency to provide informed consent, misrepresenting the evidence base and efficacy of the therapy and failing to provide adequate follow-up care for her upon detransition.
In her testimony she recounts her journey through transition and detransition and calls for a new paradigm of care for gender dysphoric youth which includes guidelines for the management of detransition.
