Scott Woodward - DATDA 8 - The Dark Enchantment of False Expectations
Thinker Of Thoughts
In the 2020 BYU Idaho Education Week Scott Woodward presented a lecture on "Defense Against The Dark Arts for LDS Teens" using references from JK Rowlings Harry Potter stories to describe 3 main attacks on faith and testimony and how to defend agains them.
The Third and final attack Woodward describes is the dark enchantment of false expectations. Using the metaphor of the Locket of Slytherin from the Harry Potter series, Woodward describes an insidious threat to the testimonies of LDS teens.
In this segment Woodward explains how having false expectations of God, the church or Prophets sets people up to abandon their testimonies when they learn disturbing things about the church or its leaders. He explains how teens must consider the possibility that they are wrong for holding such expectations and should turn to faithful sources of study and insight to keep their faith and testimonies intact.
