Rick, suspecting Morty of exaggeration, brings in the Observer, an omniscient alien rock, to audit the Adventure Cards. The Observer showcases various past adventures, but Rick and Morty grow frustrated with the clip show treatment and ask him to leave. However, the Observer returns, tormenting the Smith family by revealing their embarrassing moments. Morty, enraged, unintentionally kills the Observer, leading to the wrath of other Observers.

The Observers put Rick and Morty on trial to determine their alignment—good or evil. Legal arguments rooted in their past exploits are presented, culminating in a death sentence. In retaliation, Rick hacks their observation technology, exposing the Observers' abuse of power for personal gain. This revelation incites the Observers to turn on each other, allowing Rick and Morty to escape. In the chaos, Rick decides to whisk Morty away on a new adventure.

Rick Sanchez is the epitome of the "mad scientist" stereotype. He is a genius and a good guy, but he is irresponsible, unkempt, alcoholic, selfish, depressive, sarcastic, and lacks sanity. Unable to pay the rent for his old house, Rick moves into his daughter Beth's house and encounters his grandson Morty, a 12-year-old with little expression, shy, and not very bright. As they team up, Rick and Morty embark on a variety of adventures across parallel universes. Through numerous experiences and reflections, Rick seeks to prevent Morty from ending up like his father, Jerry, a highly unsuccessful man who, despite good intentions, proves to be quite inept on many occasions and heavily depends on his wife, Beth.

Despite their close bond, Rick and his grandson experience moments when Summer, Morty's sister, occasionally joins in the quirky adventures instigated by Rick.
