Rick attends therapy with Dr. Wong and is interrupted by a call from President Curtis, who seeks his assistance in dealing with the Loch Ness Monster in Lake Erie. As they tackle the monster, Curtis starts falling for Dr. Wong, much to Rick's annoyance, yet he refrains from intervening.

Later, Curtis contacts Rick again, interrupting their time watching Interdimensional Cable. This time, they investigate reports of a cult in Virginia. Rick is suspicious when he discovers that Dr. Wong is also brought along, raising concerns about Curtis and Wong dating.

To Rick's surprise, Virginia is not a sex cult but is under the control of Unity, Rick's ex-lover. Rick uses a scent called "Separation" to un-assimilate the people of Virginia, defying Unity's takeover of Earth. As he reclaims Virginia, he discovers that Curtis and Wong are on a first-name basis.

Unity reveals she came to warn Rick about going after Rick Prime. Rick rejects her, citing broken trust, and Unity departs. Rick disapproves of Curtis and Wong's relationship, heading home. Summer confronts Rick, demanding boundaries, and Rick apologizes silently. Later, Andre takes control of the hive mind in Virginia.

Upon realizing Unity invaded Virginia, thinking Rick was there, he checks voicemail, finding four concerned messages from Unity. Rick visits the President and shares drinks, leading Curtis to consider therapy.

Rick Sanchez is the epitome of the "mad scientist" stereotype. He is a genius and a good guy, but he is irresponsible, unkempt, alcoholic, selfish, depressive, sarcastic, and lacks sanity. Unable to pay the rent for his old house, Rick moves into his daughter Beth's house and encounters his grandson Morty, a 12-year-old with little expression, shy, and not very bright. As they team up, Rick and Morty embark on a variety of adventures across parallel universes. Through numerous experiences and reflections, Rick seeks to prevent Morty from ending up like his father, Jerry, a highly unsuccessful man who, despite good intentions, proves to be quite inept on many occasions and heavily depends on his wife, Beth.

Despite their close bond, Rick and his grandson experience moments when Summer, Morty's sister, occasionally joins in the quirky adventures instigated by Rick.
