What is an Acid?
The Science Classroom
In this video we will learn about the three theories of acids and bases.
The Arrhenius definition states that acids are compounds that contain hydrogen and yield hydrogen ions when they dissolve in water. Bases, on the other hand, yield hydroxide ions when they dissolve in water.
The Bronsted-Lowry definition states that acids are compounds that donate a hydrogen ion, while, bases are compounds that accept a hydrogen ion.
The Lewis definition states that acids are compounds that accept a pair of electrons while bases are compounds that donate a pair of electrons.
