What Does "Can't Read" Really Mean?
The Reason We Learn
Since I shared the Atlantic article about students even at elite colleges who "can't read," I've seen a lot of people asking what that even means. Parents in particular are incredulous because their elite college students graduated with honors, high grade point averages, and even high standardized test scores. I've even seen some people argue that it doesn't matter if their students can't read an entire book or won't read an entire book in college because their job won't require them to when they get a job.
So I just want to explain what it means when we say that someone can't read because there seems to be a lot of confusion about what reading is, first of all, and what "can't" means in this context.
