String Quintet in C major, D. 956, Op. posth. 163 ‘Cello Quintet’ by Franz Schubert
Schubert completed this quintet in 1828, two months before his death in November the same year. It would be his final work for chamber music. The work would not have a public premiere until 1850, several years after Schubert’s death. The term ‘Cello quintet’ was given to the work as the composition is scored for a standard string quartet plus an additional cello.
The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro ma non troppo 00:00
II. Adagio 19:47
III. Scherzo. Presto – Trio. Andante sostenuto 34:27
IV. Allegretto 45:31
