Élégie (Elegy), Op. 24 by Gabriel Fauré

Fauré had originally conceived this work as a cello sonata. By 1880 he had completed one section of the sonata, and premiered that one section at the salon of Camille Saint-Saëns in June the same year. Fauré decided not to complete the sonata, and instead adapted the work into the Élégie. This new work was premiered at the Société Nationale de Musique in December 1883.
