Dvořák completed this symphony in 1889, with the premiere performance being given in February of 1890 in Prague with Dvořák conducting. Dvořák composed the work to celebrate his election to the Bohemian Academy of Science, Literature and Arts, and the symphony is dedicated to the Academy. The work is inspired by Bohemian folk tunes and the Czech landscape, and in the words of the composer is “different from the other symphonies, with individual thoughts worked out in a new way”.
The work is comprised of four movements: I. Allegro con brio 00:00 II. Adagio 09:42 III. Allegretto grazioso — Molto vivace 20:12 IV. Allegro ma non troppo 26:48
