First book of Préludes, No. 10: ‘La Cathédrale engloutie’ by Claude Debussy
Finished in 1910 while Debussy was working on the council of the Conservatoire in Paris. The name translates to ‘The Sunken Cathedral’, named after the Breton myth of a submerged cathedral near the island of Y’s (the coast of Brittany). The repeating low tones are meant to simulate the sound of the cathedral bell ringing with the tide.
