There are two 555 timer ICs in the circuit, one for RPM and the other for direction control. The direction of the motor rotation can be set using either of the pushbuttons. This causes the direction controller IC to give an output of either 5-volts or 0-volt. This signal activates either of the optocouplers in the circuit through a normally closed limit switch. This activated optocoupler powers the RPM controller IC and the motor moves till the limit switch is pushed, which breaks the current path of the optocoupler and turns off the RPM controller IC. Reversing the direction of the motor by pushing the other pushbutton on the breadboard activates another optocoupler and powers the RPM controller IC again, but this time the motor moves in the opposite direction until the limit switch on the other side is pushed which stops the motor again. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8JRfNnEjx4
