Part IIA: Development of the Group in the Common Good
David Wemhoff
The Common Good consists of three parts which we discussed last time. In this three part mini-series (this is the second part), we address the first requirement of the common good which is respecting the fundamental development of the person through the protection of fundamental rights, and the second requirement of the common good which is the social well-being and development (spiritual and material) of the society itself. The Law of Nations is the root of this discussion and makes sense of all of this. It was taught by the Church from the School of Salamanca, through the 1800s with the likes of Luigi Taparelli, SJ and into the Twentieth Century all the way through Vatican II. Indeed, I submit that Gaudium et Spes, Inter Mirifica, and even Dignitatis Humanae set forth the proper organization of domestic and international society. In order to do so, one must understand the true meaning and nature of the person, the family, the nation, culture, fundamental rights, the state, and the international community. One must also understand the proper relationship between these things.
