AT&T Archives - The UNIX Operating System
Terminal Autism
From the early 80s. There is another video that is similar to this, that I will probably post later. I think this is interesting, and someone can even learn some basic concepts from this and use them today, since those haven't changed, and all Linux (specifically GNU or busybox) and BSD systems (and others like Solaris and MacOS X and Plan 9) still work basically the same way. One difference that you can see here is that the home directories used to be in the /usr directory. You may have heard some of these names before. Ken Thompson is known as the creator of Unix. Dennis Ritchie is known as the creator of the C language, and for making his own contributions to Unix. Brian Kernighan is known for his own contributions to Unix, especially the creation of the Awk language (along with Alfred Aho and Peter Weinberger), and also for writing "The C Programming Language" along with Dennis Ritchie himself, a book that is still to this day the standard for the language, over 40 years after its first edition.
