Using Fing to help protect your IoT network

The Fing app (available for Android or IOS platforms)

These functions are available without a Fing Account (free)

1. Scans the Network a. Tells you the devices it currently sees the network
2. Service Scan a. Shows the ports that a given device has open b. In this case, the fewer ports open the better
3. Device ping a. Confirms device is answering network traffic
4. Wake-on-Lan a. For devices that support this function, this gives you the ability to wake them up or otherwise turn them on
5. Device Details a. Gives Netbios, UPnP and Bonjour information about a device b. Shows the name properties and device type

These functions are accessible once you have logged in with a Fing account

1. Digital Inventory a. You can give user friendly names to all devices found on the network b. You can store an inventory of what is found on the network (also viewable via the Fing Web app)
2. Alerts a. The Fing app can identify and send you an alert on a device that was discovered since your last scan
3. Web app a. Allows you to access previous scans without using the Smartphone app

When you create your Fing account, make sure to use a unique password for this login. Record that password in a password manager while you still remember it.

You can scan multiple networks (yours, family members, etc). If you are scanning a network that you don't own, make sure you have their permission before doing so.
