Implementing encryption on new pools in FreeNAS in your SmartHome
TechBytes with Ron Nutter
There are ways to add further safeguards to the data you have on FreeNAS. The first is encrypting a pool. This adds protection to each drive in the pool to prevent someone from harvesting data from an individual drive. Adding a Passphrase adds a layer of protection to an entire pool.
Phase 1 - Whole pool encryption Protects individual drives from having data harvested Good protection for drives being sent in for repair or replacement
Phase 2 - Passphrase Pools remain locked when server boots up or reboots Passphrase must be entered for volume to unlock and be mounted Best protection if entire server is stolen to keep data from being accessed

Note: Anytime a drive is changed/added to the pool, key must be redownloaded Key should be stored in at least two separate places If passphrase is added or removed from pool, updated key should be downloaded
