How To Enable Parental Controls - RatTrap Week 4
TechBytes with Ron Nutter
RatTrap has taken a different approach to Parental Controls. They wanted to keep it dead simple where a single switch flip can enable or disable, RatTrap's parent company (IoT Defense) maintains a curated list of sites that needs to be blocked Please see below. Due to RATtrap’s position in the network, the Parental Controls apply to all devices on the users network.
The Web Filtering button turns the Parental Controls on and off. You can further enhance what Parent Controls does by enabling Google and Bing SafeSearch.
Protection Level dropdown options - In “Default” protection mode only malicious inbound traffic is blocked. In High protection mode ALL unsolicited inbound traffic is blocked. This is meant to be used in conjunction with “Allow Current Location” wherein if the user were to be running an Internet accessible service i.e. IP camera, only an authorized public IP source can access that service. This is very useful when the user is traveling and want to see his/her camera feed, but doesn’t want random IP addresses attempting to hack into the feed. RATtrap will only allow the hotel or cafes the user is physically located at to access the feed. Let me know if you need further details.
The Extreme option is a little different. When this is enabled, in addition to the default IP based protection, other experimental IP blocklists are automatically enforced . This provides the user further protection from malicious web sites. Since this list is experimental, a website may be flagged as bad when it is ok. This is known as a false positives which is why is it not enabled by default.
