How to create a SmartHome toolkit

We all have a collection of tools that used to address different jobs that come up from time to time. When you start adding SmartHome tech to your house, you may find that a few more tools may be needed. There are different times of tools that you may want to look at adding to your arsenal.

The USB-C to ethernet adapter can help your smart phone do double duty as a network test tool. If your phone doesn’t have a USB-C connector, a quick search of Amazon should help identify an ethernet adapter that will work with the particular smart phone that you have. Full disclosure, I have an Samsung Galaxy S9+ smartphone. I havent been able to find an equivalent lightning to ethernet adapter. If you need to do a little more digging, then looking at something like NetTool.IO might be necessary.

Since your smart home devices will have a variety of cables, some additional testers may be required. There are cable testers for HDMI and ethernet cables. Since some of your HDMI cables may be ok but not all of the signals may be passing, in that case an inline HDMI cable signal tester may tell you where the problem is if the cable ends up not being the problem.

Sometimes you may need to open up something to fix it, remove a battery, etc. The best collection of tools for this I have found is the iFixit toolkit which has a bit for just about everything.
