How to choose the right Alexa for you

1. Echo, Dot, Plus, Show Most of us probably have at least one of these in our home already. The Dot is the ideal form factor for travelling. For this one to work, you will need to have your own travelling AP since getting it to work on the Hotel wireless can be anywhere from a challenge to nearly impossible. When not in your room, I would leave this disconnected and packed up.

2. Smartphone (Android only at time of recording) You will already have this one with you. If you are an iPhone user, this eventually should be an option for you. While Alexa will have cell data to use for phoning home to the Amazon cloud or getting answers to your questions, that may not help with access to controlling your streaming media receiver or other smart home device. Some of these may need to be on the same wifi network in order to work.

3. Roav Viva If you have one in your personal vehicle, you probably take it on the road with you when travelling. In order for the Viva to work, you will need to link it to your smartphone via Bluetooth for things to work (just like you were in the vehicle). This is one option that would be doable if you have an iPhone. You will need one extra device for this to work. A DC power supply that has a cigarette lighter connect (like what is in your vehicle). This item should be less than $20 US and wont take up much space in your luggage. Even though it has to like via Bluetooth, that still leaves your phone open to being used for calls while Alexa is doing something else for you.

4. Fire HD tablet (must be 7th gen or newer) This recently became an option. Amazon has realized that you can have a device serve more than one purpose. This gives you an option to have a tablet device with you and Alexa. The dependency here is that you will want to have your own wireless for your hotel room for several reasons. You will be able to protect what you do with Alexa when it is on your own access point. For those apps that require Alexa to be on the same network as the device it is controller, this will address that as well.
