SUSTAINABLE PUERTO - MEXICO'S BAN ON SINGLE USE PLASTIC AND HOW WE STAY CONSCIOUS AT THE BEACH

One of the things that struck me when I moved to Puerto Escondido is how on board thsi town is with the environment. I wasn't totally surprised since so many beach towns are usually early adopters to nixing sigle use plastic, but it was strange to see here in Latin America where i haven't seen it before.

It turns out that in April of this year, Oaxaca became the 16th state to ban single us plastic inMexico. That's 16 out of 32 states that have banned plastic bags at the very least - some have even banned plastic cutlery of all kinds. Here in Oaxaca, businesses have a year before tey will start receiving fines to get rid of their inventory with plastic. No plastic bags, straws or sytrofoam take out containers - which is gonna make litre sizzed micheladas hard to figure out for sure.

We arrived two months later and it was already pretty much gone. I only see a straw or styrofoam minimally or you have to ask for it. Places are getting crafty with how they serve drinks - wooden chopsticks to stir - boxes instead of bags at the grocery store, and just a lot of "drink it without". I love it so much it inspired this video.
