Little Bouzoukis | Carro Armato L3 in Greek Service

The Carro Armato L3 was an Italian two-man ‘fast tank’, later reclassified as a light tank, and the most produced Italian armored fighting vehicle of the Second World War. Despite its obsolescence, it saw action across all fronts where Italian forces were engaged. One of its notable deployments was the Italian invasion of Greece, which commenced on 28th October 1940.

The Italians began their invasion with the attack on the Greek north-western Epirus region from the occupied Albania. Their attack, however, immediately grinded to a halt, as staunch Greek defenders managed to effectively exploit the rugged and mountainous terrain of the region. After stopping the invaders, the Greek forces went on the counter-offensive, pushing the Italians back to the Albanian border and beyond. As they advanced, they captured a considerable amount of Italian war material, much of which was immediately put to use by the comparatively poorly equipped Greek army. Among the captured and reused equipment were several Carri Armati L3 tanks, which the Greeks incorporated into their own forces.
