POTATOES - Can we Survive on MARS with it?
Long range survival in Mars will need a lot of food, but thankfully, Potatoes got all we need.
Assuming that 100 grams of Sweet potato has about 86 calories, comprised of 1% fat, 92% carbs and 7% proteins, and a normal person needs about 2000 calories a day, we would need about 2.3 kilos of sweet potatoes per day.
One yield of plant takes about 50 centimetres of space to grow successfully. So basically you can have four plants in on square metre of land. Another thing we have to keep in mind is that to fully grow the plants, it would take about 3 to 4 months. In this case we will be calculating with 3 months. That would be the minimum amount of time to keep our subjects alive. Ok so, how much land would we need to farm in order to get that. In this case lets use the Hectare standard of measuring farm lands, which is about 10,000 square meters, 100x100 meters. That times 4, is about 40,000 plants.
