We see them in places like Portland or Minneapolis sporting military weapons, driving armoured personnel carriers, and dressed like the jackboots from a dystopian 70s film. It’s hard to see these people in your neighbourhood without feeling like you’re under attack. How did we become comfortable with a state of affairs where armed agents of the state can attack our neighbours in the streets of our hometowns?
