In this video, we will show how you can protect specific cells from editing in Excel.
The idea is to unlock certain cells and then protect the entire sheet from editing. First, we verify if all cells are locked. To do this, you press on the arrow at the left upper side of the sheet to select all cells, you right-click and select Format Cells….
Then you navigate to Protection where you can see the checkbox next to Locked is checked, so for the moment, all cells in the sheet are locked.
We select Cancel and make the selection of cells that we still want to adjust after protecting the sheet. When the cells you should select are all scattered in the worksheet, there are two possibilities to select all yellow cells.
The most straightforward way is to select all cells manually, but this can be quite some task when the number of employees increases. To select all yellow cells in a fast way you select the entire range and press ctrl + f. This opens the find menu. You select Options and then you tell excel to find all cells formatted as a particular cell of interest.
To do that, you press on the arrow next to Format and select Choose Format From Cell. Next, you click on the cell of interest. A preview of the format to find appears in the menu. As you can see this is the yellow formatting we are looking for.
Now we press Find All and below you see all formatted cells appear. Next, you press ctrl + a to select all formatted cells. You select Close and when you click in the table, you see that all yellow cells are selected.
You right-click, select Format Cells…, Protection, and uncheck the Locked box. When this is done, we are ready to protect the sheet. To do so, you go to Review and click on Protect Sheet. A menu opens where you can choose to add a password. In case you don’t particularly need one, you just press on OK.
