In this tutorial we explain how to create a decision tree in Excel. First, we show how you can download and import the Excel add-in. We go to google, type ybian / treeplan and click on the GitHub link.

Here, we download the ZIP file under Code and extract the file on our computer. Next, we return to Excel, click on File, Options, Add-ins and click on Go, next to Manage Excel Add-ins. Select Browse and go to the Treeplan zip file. We go to Desktop, click on the file and double click on ByTreePlan.

When the Treeplan menu is opened in the ribbon, we select a random cell in the sheet where we would like the tree to appear. We click on New and we can choose the number of branches we need.

We can add all the necessary information to each branch. We start with the name. So, we replace Decision by Option. To do this, you double click on Decision 1, select Decision and type what you like.

The next element we will add is the pay-off or cost for this branch. This should be inserted below the name, so we select the cell containing 0 and type the required pay-off. If you are working with costs instead of profits, we first have to tell Excel that we are working with costs. To do so, you navigate to Options in the Main section. When you click on it, a menu opens where you have to set Decision Node Choices to Minimize.

In order to add a second level to the tree, we select the cell at the end of a branch. Next we click on Change To Event and select the required number of branches.

To copy paste a subtree, you select the cell that contains the first node of the subtree. If you click on the node, the node itself is selected instead of the cell. So we select the cell below the node and navigate one cell up with the arrow key on your keyboard.

Next, under Treeplan in the ribbon you click on Copy Subtree. Then you select the cell at the end of the other branch and you select Paste Subtree. The subtree appears and you adjust the parameters as you like.

You can also change a node to a terminal one by selecting Change To Terminal in the ribbon.

To insert a branch in the tree, you select the cell containing the starting node of a subtree. Next, you click on Insert Decision or Event. At first, you only have one branch, but you can add another branch by selecting Add Branch in the ribbon.
