Ep. 86 1 Pitch At A Time? Or Thinking Several Ahead?
Slider Domination
Is it better to focus on making one pitch at a time? Or thinking several pitches ahead? Like a pool shark? It does pose an interesting question. And here is my take…
I will conduct this on a Pro vs Con basis
1 Pitch
PRO
Simplicity.
Stay in the moment.
Focus on the NOW.
That is essential for pitching. I touch on this constantly through the videos here on my channel.
While only considering 1 pitch at a time,
you can better react to how the at bat is going.
Your mind is clear, as you are only preoccupied with the next pitch. With that notion, comes knowing that you are always 1 pitch away from getting an out, or out of a jam.
CON Inhibit growth and advancement in understanding pitching. Lack of Knowing yourself. Knowing your strengths and how to utilize them the best.
Thinking Ahead
PRO It is all a matter of Personal understanding. Locked in. Feeling great! Know the hitter. Know the situation. Know what you are working with. You have a crystal clear vision of your whole game plan and can easily navigate through to the end goal. This is a matter of commanding all your pitches, especially your fastball, to both sides of the plate, as well as UP and Down. In this moment, The hitters aren’t catching up to your fastball and your secondary pitches can’t miss! LOCKED IN! It’s a GREAT FEELING!!! Therefore, you want to build upon it!
Consider these situations:
Your plan is Fastball Away, Fastball In, Fastball Up and In, Slider Away. Go make it happen.
Or say you fall behind 2-0. Next pitch is a fastball, outer half. Hitter swung and was late on the fastball. So what pattern do you see? 2-1 come fastball In to even it up as he will be late again. 2-2, bury him Down and Away with your best Slider.
LHP vs RHH
2 Seamer away breaks off the plate Fastball in Change up away Slider, in off the back foot of the hitter.
You can do this all day when you know that you can control it.
CON
It can lead to Thinking too far ahead.
Not taking the current pitch seriously.
Can result in Mislocated, Poorly executed pitches. Constantly Pitching behind is no fun nor with your head on a swivel. EEESH!!!
To keep it simple, you can never go wrong with making 1 pitch at a time. Much of that comes down to trusting your catcher and his judgement, as well as your adaptability on the mound. However, When the game situation increases in magnitude, it’s a matter of slowing down everything. You are in charge. You have the #1 next to the name in the scorecard for position. This is where one pitch at a time has tremendous benefits. STAY IN THE MOMENT! You will have success there.
