How often should you throw each pitch? This has changed drastically at the BIG LEAGUE Level. As some of the game’s best are throwing their fastball under 50% of the time! The factors that enable this are physical durability and their insane ability to consistently command 3-4 pitches.

As a high school aged pitcher and even in college, you have to learn how to pitch with your fastball. Establish the heater and everything comes off of that. When you want to climb the ladder in this great game, you have to build a solid foundation.

I will be the first to tell you NOT TO FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR SLIDER!!!

I have seen many HS pitchers fall in love with their breaking balls only to bring on disaster!!! When pitchers have not yet developed the physical maturity to throw a breaking ball over and over, the arm will drag and fall under the ball. What does that mean??? You are throwing the dreaded cement mixer to the plate. Those get hit hard and far!!! To make matters worse, TOMMY JOHN will come a calling, amongst other arm ailments. So be smart in your pitch selection and listen to your body. If you have a spot where you have to throw a hitter 3-4 straight breaking balls, OK. GO with it. Don’t make a habit of it. Because you already have him thinking as he goes into his next at bat against you. Your biggest challenge at this point is locating the fastball to start the next at bat.

Many MLB organizations limit their top prospects to pitch with only fastball and change up for the first few years in the minors. For one, to keep their arms fresh and secondly, to learn how to pitch. Creating the foundation is everything. When you add in devastating movement to that solid combo, naturally, the results will dramatically increase.

There is no set plan or template to follow. Each pitcher is individual and unique. The days when one pitch feels better and/or is more effective than the rest, you will run with it til they force you to make an adjustment. However, when in doubt, throw your fastball. You will be amazed how many hitters will find a way to get themselves out.
