Enjoy the Process
As baseball is a game of failure, the successes which you accumulate continue to motivate and keep you hungry. It is what continues to bring you back in pursuit of greatness. As losing is an unfortunate reality of the game, it teaches many valuable lessons. On the other hand, Being intrical in winning brings no greater feeling. So through all the ups and downs, never lose sight in the development taking place. That which, when you stay the course, you will develop into the best version of yourself as a player, and more importantly, a person. Therefore, ENJOY THE PROCESS.
The day in, day out dedication cultivates optimal results. Is it going to be a smooth ride???? NO. It never is. Adversity is an inevitable part of the game. Those who understand it, accept it and have a game plan to navigate through it, are usually at the top of their craft.
Even keel is the way to go. Never too high, never too low. Especially as a pitcher. Be grateful for your successes and affable in failure. Because Everything is a learning experience. Pushing the meter too far either way makes it harder and takes longer to get back to normal functioning. Find your groove.
Enjoy the process of having coaches and mentors. There is no substitute for great mentorship. It is hard to put a price tag on it’s value. Combined with that, Great teammates last a lifetime. Their influence, connection, motivating spirit and support is worth its weight in gold. The feeling that you have gone into battle with a group that had each other’s back elevates any level of friendship. Win or lose, that bond is forever.
While enjoying the process, self reflection comes into play a lot. It is always about how can you get better. Difficult scenarios are easier to overcome when you enjoy the process. You have better clarity in criticism. Both internally and publicly. It is understood that any assessment about performance is geared towards improvement.
I am going to leave you with a hypothetical occurrence and how to quickly restore boldness on the pitcher's mound.
If you hang a Slider that gets hit to the moon for a walk off, that’s a low, low feeling. The silver lining here, is that you will never make those mistakes again...Undoubtedly, you will replay the at bat and the final pitch in your mind over and over again. Thinking about what went wrong and where it all broke down.
And what you may learn, first off, is to never rush the delivery. You won’t try to throw the hell out of the Slider any more when you break your hands.
