Congrats to Washington Nationals on winning the 2019 World Series!!!
In this video, we are going to break down the final at bat. The 27th out of the 7th game of the 115th Fall Classic. And a big shout out to Daniel Hudson here. The right handed reliever is not getting the publicity accustomed to the one who has the glory of recording the last out of the World series. Mainly, because he is overshadowed by Scherzer and Strasburg. Nonetheless, Hudson got the party started from deep in the heart of Texas to the Nation’s Capital. And he is going to be honored in this video breakdown today.
One of the biggest things that impressed me with this outing, is the fact that Hudson first started warming up in the 7th inning. And when he came into the game, it was no longer a save situation. These 2 factors can add up to a potential disaster in the 9th inning. Hudson kept himself mentally ready to peak when he was in the middle of the diamond to get the last 3 outs...and he did in DOMINANT FASHION!!!
Facing the top of the order, George Springer popped up and Altuve was blown away on 3 pitches. Up comes Michael Brantley. The Astros leading hitter in the regular season. Who only struck out a mere 66 times!!! That's unheard of nowadays...
First Pitch Fastball DOWN & IN for a ball at 96. Moved his feet. Keep that in mind.
1-0 PAINT!!! 96, outside corner on the knees. Can't throw it any better
1-1 Slider missed inside at 87. Moved his feet again
2-1 Challenge HIM! CHALLENGE HIM!!!! Fastball DOWN & IN at 96. Home run distance, foul. Challenge him! 2 outs with a 4 run lead. A solo homer is not deflating. Even a non issue.
2-2 Catcher Gomes wants the fastball up. Hudson misses down and in at 97. Again moves his feet
3-2 Fastball, 96 AWAY. That pitch was hittable. Brantley put a good swing on it. The fact that Hudson moved his feet 3 times this at bat, creates a hesitation in diving out over the plate. The fastball in on the long foul ball was a reaction to turn on. When you move a hitter’s hands, hips, or feet, you are expanding the outer part of the plate, immensely!!! You have so much more to work with out here because of this indecision factor.
3-2 again
Let the Party Begin!!!!!!
Hudson buried him DOWN & IN with the Slider! That's where you gotta put it when it is righty on lefty. I showed that execution by Max Scherzer in depth in a recent video from the postseason.
This at bat was a great display of pitching IN & OUT. So many sequences today are of the UP & DOWN variety. IN & OUT is a timeless tactic which, when executed properly, will consistently get out quality hitters.
Congrats to the Nationals and I salute you Daniel Hudson! ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpXa0q4_kG0
