Artificial intelligence has advanced so exponentially over the last three years that it now appears that barely a month passes by without a newsworthy AI breakthrough. Many believe that it will supplant jobs as AI advances, generating an ever-growing pool of unemployed people. But technology has been advancing continuously for 250 years, and unemployment in the US has stayed between 5 and 10 percent for almost all that time. Just look at the rise of the internet in 1993, when Mosaic was just a few months old, and many thought it would kill work.

Artificial Intelligence can build millions of jobs well beyond our conceivable capacities, writes Dan Rivers. The BLS predicts faster-than-average employment growth in many occupations that are expected to affect AI. accountants, forensic scientists, geological technicians, technical researchers, MRI operators, dietitians, financial experts, software managers, loan officers, medical secretaries and customer support representatives will all benefit from artificial intelligence, he says. Rivers: True work growth will come from areas where our imaginations can't drive us yet. He says we are just trying to do new things because a lot of what we are doing is trying to be streamlined. OECD report places a nine percent share of potentially lost jobs to computerization. Can AI replace low-skilled employees and create high-skilled job opportunities? The important issue is how most people are willing to do a job that is only a little more difficult than the one they have at present. There aren't a set number of workers that technology takes one by one, leading to rising unemployment.
