The Most Complex Stone Fitting Ever Done. Ancient Techniques Used To Restore Ancient Temples

#parthenon #polygonal #stonemasonry It is often but incorrectly assumed that stone work such as seen at the Acropolis in Athens is just squared off blocks. That each stone was made to perfect 90 degrees would be amazing enough anyway yet it is not true. Each stone was individually fitted without flat surfaces and right angles. With rare exceptions such as column drums being perfectly flat. This compares directly to the famed stonework of the Inca where much of the stonework is not truly polygonal but 4 sided blocks. However the truly polygonal work which is not seen in the Parthenon has now been surpassed in its complexity. Since the restoration project employs ancient techniques to fit broken pieces of the original temple to incorporate them into new pieces of stone. A fit that is orders of magnitude more complex than the polygonal work. In essence it's like taking a polygonal block then breaking it and throwing away one half, only to refit a new stone piece onto the chaotic surface of the broken one. It's like getting two pieces of glass to fit versus breaking those glass pieces and fitting a new piece of glass onto the broken edge. The polygonal work is matching surfaces that are in ORDER. Repairing broken stones is matching surfaces that are in CHAOS.
