The Value of The Thumbnail Sketch

In this video I’m going to talk about the value of the thumbnail sketch, how to draw them, and the importance of doing them at the early stages of your creative projects. I will show you how I sketch and draw these thumbnails from imagination traditionally with pencil in a sketchbook, and share some insights into why I think this is the best way to record your ideas down rapidly at any time.

This video is traditional drawing, but the same methods and ways of thinking can be applied to doing thumbnail sketches digitally using software such as Photoshop and Procreate.

In the video I show the process of me sketching ideas for a Samurai castle, inspired by my previous trips to Japan. I aim to take one or two of these designs further, all the way to a finished conceptual illustration.
