Fatal Frame: Based on a True Story... Really?

In 2002 Fatal Frame released on PS2 in North America with the statement on the box and in-game title screen that it was: Based on a True Story.

So is that true? Is the Himuro Mansion a real place? After nearly 20 years, this claim has been the root cause of lots of misinformation. Lets get to the bottom of it.
