Popular Bash Commands Overview!

Today I want to go some popular BASH (Bourne Again Shell) commands for Linux and Unix systems when using the BASH shell in terminal. These commands are meant to help make navigating the file systems of your machine much simpler if you are only doing it via Terminal or CMD.

This video will only cover these commands in their simplest introductions, therefore many of them have a-lot more functionality that I haven't covered in this video.

The commands I go over are the following: ls — List directory contents cd — Change directory who -- prints information about all users who are currently logged in whoami -- find current user exit -- close out of terminal or program sort -- external command that concatenates files while sorting their contents according to a sort type and writes results of sort to standard output grep — search text for patterns specified by the user cat — Read a file, create a file, and concatenate files uname -- provides users with important system information pwd — Print working directory mkdir -- Create a directory less — view the contents of a text file head — Read the start of a file tail — Read the end of a file apropos -- searches manual page names and descriptions for a user-supplied keyword touch — Creates a file type -- determine a location of a particular command alias -- see what aliases are set chmod — Sets the file permissions flag on a file or folder pipe | -- takes the standard output of one command and passes it as the input to another locate — Locate a specific file or directory rmdir — Remove directory rm -- remove command to remove files or directories mv — Move or rename directory echo — Prints text to the terminal window date -- see the current date and time
