In this video I explain why the variance weights scores that are farther from the mean more heavily by squaring deviations from the mean. This squaring places greater weight on farther scores, which increases our estimate of the variability in the population. Weighting scores more heavily assumes a normal distribution of the population and makes up for the fact that we will be less likely to sample scores that are farther from the mean, because these scores are less frequent.
