BYE, BYE WINDOWS - HELLO LINUX - Installing Mint in 2020

Bye, bye Windows - Hello Linux - Moving from Windows to Linux part 2. Here we install Linux Mint. We also look at setting up a Linux system with multiple drives.

Microsoft is ending support for Windows 7 on 14th January, 2020. If you don't want to use Windows 8.x or Windows 10 then you can install Linux Mint. It has a similar look and feel to Windows so you can adapt to it very quickly.

The reasons Linux Mint was chosen as the first Linux option are: because it has an interface, "Look and Feel" if you will, which is similar to the Windows 7 interface; There is, usually, more software available for Linux Mint than some other Distributions ("Distros"); Linux Mint also gives those who want to "explore" Linux further the opportunity to do so if they so wish (you don't have to!); Linux Mint has been available for at least 10 years and has been #1 Distro for at least 7 of those 10 years (these types of statistics give people confidence in the product).

All the Linux installations make the assumption that you're using an older computer. The default settings used are:

2 Core Processor 4GB RAM Memory 128MB Video Memory 36GB Minimum Hard Disk Space

It is very likely that your computer will have considerably more Hard Disk Space. Probably in the region of 128GB - 512GB, which is good.

NOTES:

I tend to make the videos "on the fly", there's no script and everything is done from memory with just a few notes to jog the "old, grey cells". I do apologise for the umms, ahhs, erms, and pregnant pauses in the video - men tend not to be quite as good at multi-tasking :D .

I will, when possible, copy and paste commands to make the videos a little quicker and so as to not waste your time. I can type or talk but cannot do both well simultaneously!

BIO:

John trained as a Systems Analyst/Programmer, has also worked as a Systems Administrator on Windows Servers and Workstations and has been dabbling with Linux since the mid 1990s.

Along the way John has learnt and used COBOL, C, C++, Visual Basic, Delphi, PHP (HTML, CSS, JavaScript etc.), SQL, various Scripting languages and some proprietary database languages. John wrote his first website in early 1996 using Windows Notepad (no IDEs were available then) and, later, started using HotDog before moving to Dreamweaver then to NetBeans and Atom.

John, now, is freelance and develops software solely for the Internet. John uses both Windows and Linux daily and develops web software in both environments using PHP, HTML, CSS (Sass & Less), SQL, JavaScript and various frameworks as the project dictates.
