Turning experimental academic research into software presents a tricky trade-off between solid engineering to create artifacts of lasting value and hasty speculative prototyping needed to survive in today's world of "publish or perish". In this talk, I will explain my strategies for being active in both spheres, and how they have led projects such as Mitsuba, Dr.Jit, layerlab, Instant Meshes, pybind11, nanobind, nanogui, and others.
