SM64 The Dark Stars & Unused Levels - Full Playthrough [Savestateless]

TIMESTAMPS IN THE COMMENTS. Super Mario 64 The Dark Stars is a 75 star light kaizo ROM hack made by Caasje (the Unused Levels is a 10 star hack containing a few different levels that were scrapped). It contains pretty short, but slightly challenging stars and obstacles; making it an effective practice hack for people wanting to get into kaizo hacks. Platforming-wise, there's nothing too unique here. It pretty much gets you into the bare basics of kaizos like frequent wallkicking, crossovers, arches, slope shenanigans, lava bouncing, and several tight-ish jumps. It has some interesting ones like the shell maneuvering and wallkicks that change your angle, but other than that, it pretty much repeats itself. And they're straight into the point, so you won't have to think much on how to approach it. Theming wise, it's pretty basic too. Courses like Course 6 and Course 8 have platforms based on their themes which is always cool, but most of the time some platforms in the other levels could exist anywhere regardless of the theme. However, courses like Course 4 and Course 7 were boring and tedious, and scaled very big with not much going on in them. Course 10 and Chaotic Cube Collection were probably the most interesting looking themes and platforming. As for Unused Levels, I kinda enjoyed those more than some of the main hack's levels (specifically Course 3 and Bowser 2). Another thing I liked is that it isn't crazy with collectible stars, so it relies more on the raw platforming. 100 coins are also nonexistent (they're not inherently bad, but it's cool not to deal with them once and a while). The music is also fine with most of them being repeats from other hacks, and they can be very loud. But it works regardless. The game also has 3 different endings, with the 3rd being pretty obscure, but there are some hidden signs spread out to help with that (all endings are shown in the video). Overall, it's a pretty quality hack. I don't think it's as amazing as people make it out to be, but it's a good effort and well made hack to help out players wanting some challenge and beginner light kaizos, but not anything extreme. So if you're into that, this hack most likely won't disappoint. So cool work, Chatje.
