The Untold Story of Cracker Cow
OnSiteTrav
The Florida Cracker Cow. Left over from the Spanish in the late 1500's these cows roamed Florida Wild for several hundred years, until the mid 1800's. At which time early Florida settlers began "cracking" them with whips out the woods. Building them into large herds, which they then slowly grazed through the big lake area (okeechobee) then down to Punta Gorda. They loaded them on boats headed to Cuba. These early cow boys were paid in spanish gold, approximately 1 oz per cow. The same price day, as well as in the time of Solomon.... interesting how the Gold standard is so consistent. These settlers then purchased large tracts of land. Becoming the first large ranch families of Florida.
