Why have a monastery?

What are monasteries? Do we need to know about them? What did they provide that we may not have today? Where did those functions go? The role of the monestary cannot be over stated. The government has taken over most of those functions but likely doesn't do as good a job with them! That has far reaching implications for society. More far reaching, however, is the loss of hierarchy as such, which creates domicide, not merely because you lose a place to go that you might fit in, but you also lose a sense for how to fit in and why.
