How to Create Hue Masks in Adobe Photoshop Part 1 - Advanced HSL and Color Range Techniques
Max Chroma
In this video tutorial I teach how to first create some basic color test patterns, and then how to manually extract "Hue Masks" or selections based on Hue, by using the Color Range tool along with some adjustment layers to trick the Color Range into seeing more than just 6 basic Hues.
The first 4 minutes or so are focused on creating some color test patterns. The manual Color Range technique is shown after that and how the default "Sampled Colors" method differs from the preset color-selection options. Then I teach about using adjustment layers such as HSL to rotate the main hues of the original image, and also how to use Selective Color instead of Color Range to grab the primary hue range (so it functions as an adjustment layer in real-time rather than a process with color range).
After that be sure to watch as I show some other image examples and where the Hue Masks aren't getting into the Tints, Tones, and Shades of color compared to the color range sampled-colors method, or using other methods like the free HCWB Color Range action I have available in the link at the bottom of the description.
However, there are times where Color Range exceeds at doing things that neither the Hue-Mask technique or the HCWB Color Range action are capable of... such as the Localized Clusters option and using "Shift" to Add (+) colors to the color range input. You can Add or Subtract areas, and create more than one localized selection.
The HCWB Color Range action is extracting the color and how similar it is to other colors in the entire image, and does not have a built-in "localized clusters" option like Color Range does.
In Part 2 I will continue some more advanced techniques for learning how and when to use whatever tools are in photoshop by default or that you have in your arsenal. It helps to know that sometimes there are features overlooked in the native tools that don't require going to extra steps in actions or other tricks. There is an update coming to the HCWB Color Range action which will include some options for working with Neutral and Chromatic greyscales, and I will get into that in the next video as well.
Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more spelunking in the chroma caves! :D
