--Partial Script-- On March 4th, 2020, a Roblox Youtuber by the name of DefildPlays tweeted out that he has opened up a website that allows users to complete offers for points, which are then redeemable for cash or robux. Immediately this caused quite a bit of stir on Roblox, as the offer of “free robux” is incredibly enticing to kids without a source of income, and could lead to them unsuspectingly selling their personal information. So you might be wondering why exactly I’m making this topic its own video, instead of including it on The Robloxian. Well, I have quite a few problems with this, and it would have extended the episode to a pretty lengthy amount. But without further ado, let’s jump right in.
So first, let me get this out of the way. Technically, Defild is not violating Roblox community guidelines, as the Robux is redeemed in the form of a gift card and not actually group funds. Roblox terms of service explicitly states that only giving away robux is against terms and conditions, and not actually giving out (or in this case, “offering”) gift cards.
Let’s start by talking about COPPA. You know, that law that all the kid friendly Youtube channels on the internet were worried about. It turns out, it’s not just YouTube that it applies to! Under COPPA, screen names such as twitter handles, and email addresses are still considered personal information.
And this is where I have to give Defild some credit. Whether it was him who created the website or someone else did actually implement checks to ensure that the user signing up is at least 13 years old.
That being said, still I have a LOT of issues with the website. First, you’ll quickly find on the website that there is no privacy policy. This is a MAJOR red flag as the collection of data has been a hot topic around the world, with legislation such as the European GDPR being written to help consumers and their data privacy. And while the offerwall OfferToro DOES in fact have a privacy policy regarding data collection, Defild’s website does NOT. This, to my knowledge, breaks several data collection laws, including the GDPR, the California Online Privacy Protection Act, and I’m assuming that there are similar laws in more places around the world. This isn’t something to be taken lightly.
As such, I will be personally filing a complaint against the business online through the Attorney ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tFLNjyRVRI
