Sad Music Played Forwards and Reversed - The Reversed Version Shocked Me!
Erick McNerney
This video is sad music I wrote being played both forwards and reversed. The audio result of the first piece wasn't reversed - but rather the MIDI performance. So it does not have the usual characteristics of a reversed audio track. The notes were reversed before the virtual orchestra "performed" the piece. The title is not an attempt at clickbait. It really did shock me. I don't always experiment like this and reverse my tracks. But I'm really glad I tried it out on this piece. The first track was written improvisationally, and I didn't think much of it. I liked the general idea, and it had a slightly tragic mood to it. However, I once I was done recording it, I decide to experiment and reverse the MIDI performance (notation). It caught me off guard because the result was something totally unexpected. It was like a harrowing, emotional farewell. The chord changes are very striking and strange, and the strings are very high, so it has an almost otherworldly sound. Hard to put into words the mood it creates (at least for me). And as the pieces progresses and gets towards the end (which was the original piece's beginning) it sounds like a peaceful resignation - like an acceptance of the farewell or departure. Please note, the key signature of the reversed piece was changed in order to add variety, since they were released together on the album "On A Bed Of Thorns"
