Why Learn About Art History? Drawing Inspiration From Rothko for a New Painting
Kyle Clements
Back when I was in art school, a number of my fellow students would complain about having to learn art history as part of the program curriculum. They couldn't see value in learning about art of the past.
I always loved art history, as I found it a great source of inspiration. One time at a museum, I had the opportunity to see a Rothko in person. Prior to this, I had only ever seen his work presented in slides, or plates in art history books. After seeing the work in person, I saw how much more there was to them. It was a powerful experience, and it provided the inspiration for this work of mine.
