Sonic Art: Recreating One of My Favourite Artworks (Part 1)
Kyle Clements
I am attempting to recreate one of my favourite artworks.
Years ago, I experienced a brilliant sculptural installation/sound art piece called "The Paradise Institute" by artists Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller. It involves walking into a large wooden box containing a forced-perspective theatre set and a pair of headphones.
Their recording techniques created a sensation of really being there, I could hear people moving around, chatting, munching popcorn, etc. I would swear someone had walked behind me, but when I turned around to look, I saw I was still the only one in the room. The sensation was so realistic and strong, it caused the hairs on the back of my neck to stand up.
It was an experience that has stayed with me for 20 years, one I am interested in learning to recreate. This is my first attempt and gives a brief overview of what I think is happening, and how I think they did it.
Note: Nothing in this video was sponsored, everything used was purchased by me. I even bought the ears at full price instead of waiting for a sale.
