Kyle Paints 2023: New Approach Didn't Go as Smoothly as Hoped.
Kyle Clements
My latest art show has been a struggle to put together.
Normally, I work on a series of sketches, then I narrow it down to the best 20 or so. I will project and trace two of them, paint them as a pair, then either move onto the next pair of paintings, or make some new sketches.
For this show, I spent more time developing sketches, and I put a lot of effort into making sampler boards to try out new techniques before committing anything to canvas. Then when everything was ready, I started painting everything together all at once.
This new approach turned out to be stressful and demotivating for me.
The main problem was a lack of any sense of progress. I was months in, and had nothing finished to show for it. In fact, nothing was done until a month before the show! Normally all but 1 or 2 of my paintings are done months in advance and I get a chance to live with them and make sure I'm happy with them. I didn't have much time for that.
On top of that, life kept popping up and getting in the way creating distractions and slowdowns in my productivity. With my old approach, an unexpected slowdown might only cost me a painting or two not making it into the show, but with this approach, everything is being worked on at once, so an unexpected event could prevent the entire show from being ready in time! But I managed to pull though, and it looks like 12 of the 15 pieces are going to make it.
I think I will be returning to my old methods after this.
This show opens September 23rd, 2023.
