In this three part series, we explore all the ins and outs of oscilloscope data sheets. All 39 pages!
Today, oscilloscope data sheets are really a few different documents. It's a product brochure, a configuration guide, and a spec sheet.
It begins with a brochure section, which covers what the oscilloscope manufacturer wants to highlight. It's our way of translating a table of specs into an easier-to-understand format and spotlight key capabilities.
The bi-fold photo is a classic datasheet section, and they are left over from the print days.
The configuration guide talks through oscilloscope models and key differences between models. In this case, it's channel count, bandwidth. It then covers options software upgrades, productivity tools, probes, accessories, and calibrations. This is useful for figuring out how you can upgrade/trick out your oscilloscope.
After the config guide, we have a spec sheet. There are warranted specs and typical specs. Warranted specs are key specs that will always be met. Typical specs help identify how an oscilloscope normally behaves, but aren't necessarily guaranteed.
We then discuss the details of hardware bandwidth limits, oscilloscope input coupling, oscilloscope input impedance, oscilloscope input sensitivity range, oscilloscope vertical resolution, and maximum input voltage.
Oscilloscope hardware bandwidth limits, and oscilloscope input coupling are available on almost all scopes.
Input impedance will be "high impedance" or 50 ohm mode. All high speed signals operate in 50 ohm mode.
Oscilloscope input sensitivity range is how far you can zoom in our out in 1:1 mode. If you use a 10:1 probe everything gets multiplied by 10.
Vertical resolution is ADC bits, but you really should think about effective number of bits.
Maximum input voltage is simply how high of a voltage you can put put into the front end without causing damage. It has both an RMS value and a peak value.
